Accrington, Hyndburn Borough Council

  • We ran a pop-up engagement event on in the heart of Accrington Town Square. The aim was to invite residents and visitors to share ideas about the future of the Market Hall, Market Chambers and Burton’s Chambers. People were encouraged to take part in a series of quick, creative activities – giving their views on the kinds of market stalls, food and drink options, and play features they’d like to see, as well as ideas for how the surrounding buildings could be used. The pop-up welcomed a broad mix of people of all ages and backgrounds, creating an informal and accessible way for the community to have their say.

  • Participants wanted to see a traditional market feel balanced with affordable food, cafes, and independent traders. There was strong interest in inclusive play features and space for families. Market Chambers was seen as a potential community venue, while views on Burton’s Chambers co-working space were more mixed. Across the board, people spoke about the importance of bringing life and energy back into Accrington town centre – with redevelopment that supports both local businesses and the wider community.

PLACED’s work helped local people, including local children, share their views in a fun way on the future of the renovated market and what types of offerings and facilities they would like to see inside!

PLACED were commissioned by Rider Levett Bucknall, in partnership with Hyndburn Borough Council, to deliver community engagement as part of the launch of temporary market stalls in Accrington Town Square. This activity supported the wider Town Centre Investment Plan – a 10–15 year vision to help Accrington thrive as a modern market town. Alongside physical changes to buildings like Market Chambers and Burton’s Chambers, the plan is focused on celebrating local identity, supporting business growth, and making the town centre more inviting and inclusive for everyone.
