Stockport 8, Stockport MDC

Between December 2023 and March 2024, we delivered a two-phase programme of engagement with local people of all ages. In the first phase, we ran two pop-ups, two co-design workshops and four full-day sessions in primary schools. The second phase included a three-day youth programme, three community workshops and two additional pop-up events. Across all sessions, we explored local priorities and ideas for Stockport 8; from the challenges people currently face to what they wanted to see in the new neighbourhood. We spoke with young people, families, and the wider community about their views on Stockport, what matters to them, and what would make the area feel welcoming and valuable for all.

The insights gathered directly informed the social value strategy for Stockport 8. Across all engagement activities, people expressed a clear desire for more community facilities, activities, and support, as well as better ways to travel around and access the area. There was strong local pride and a shared ambition to build a neighbourhood that feels friendly, inclusive and open to positive change. Young people told us their priorities were culture, heritage, creativity, community and safety – a powerful reflection of what matters most for the next generation.
“This was such a great opportunity for the children. Lily was amazing with them, so kind and engaging, and she valued every single idea that the children came up with. ”
PLACED were commissioned by Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, alongside Social Value Portal, to support the development of a social value strategy for Stockport 8. A social value strategy is used to guide the benefits which can be achieved for local communities and businesses through the development process. The Stockport 8 neighbourhood will bring together housing, green spaces and places for small businesses, aiming to create a welcoming, inclusive place that benefits the whole community. The project is a collaboration between English Cities Fund (ECF), MUSE, Homes England, Legal & General and Stockport MDC.
