PLACED was commissioned by Jigsaw Homes to gather residents’ views and opinions on the Miles Platting area, to inform upcoming designs for new social housing. The Miles Platting area of Manchester is situated just outside the city centre, and has traditionally been a predominantly social housing area with a well established community. Jigsaw Homes collaborated with MCC and DK Architects to develop initial concepts for the site adjacent to their office and has been committed to involving the local community in the development process. PLACED was invited to support this initial engagement work, working closely with Jigsaw Homes, MCC, and DK Architects to deliver the project. This work forms part of a longer-term, incremental approach to ensuring Miles Platting provides a good quality of life for all residents.

Miles Platting

  • PLACED delivered two phases of engagement for the project, ensuring residents and stakeholders were kept informed and involved throughout the design process. Engagement for phase one included drop-in sessions, a pop-up event, and online engagement, providing opportunities for residents to learn about the proposals and share their views in an informal setting. PLACED delivered two pop-up events for the second phase of consultation, providing opportunities for residents to learn about the drafted proposal based on the findings from the previous phase and share feedback. Council staff and project team members supported in-person events to ensure that community participants could ask direct questions of those working on the proposal and benefit from their technical expertise.

  • Comments, responses, feedback, and ideas collected through the various activities and events were compiled and periodically reported back to the client and wider project team to ensure that community views were influencing the development of the proposal. PLACED facilitated meaningful dialogues with the area’s communities and users, ensuring diverse voices were heard and integrated into the planning process.
