Leigh Civic Square, Wigan Council

We delivered two engagement phases; the first focused on local priorities and design preferences, the second on gathering feedback on a draft design. By combining online surveys, pop-up sessions, youth workshops and drop-in events, we made it easy for people to take part. Activities took place across Leigh – including in the Civic Square, Leigh Library, Leigh Sports Village and local schools – and were timed alongside festivals and events to encourage wider participation. In total, 573 people shared their views.

The community shared a clear and hopeful vision for a Civic Square that feels vibrant, welcoming and rooted in Leigh’s identity. People called for the space to celebrate local heritage through art and design, offer flexibility for events and everyday use, and be more accessible for families and disabled people. There was strong support for more greenery, wildlife-friendly planting and improved safety through better lighting and infrastructure. Young people also emphasised the need for informal spaces to play and gather. These findings continue to shape the design process for Leigh Civic Square.
“PLACED have supported Wigan Council in delivering engagement that has genuinely shaped the design for Leigh Civic Square”
Working with Wigan Council and SLR, PLACED supported the redesign of Leigh Civic Square by leading community engagement throughout the design process. We focused on enabling local people to feed in their knowledge and design preferences to help understand more about the space today, how it's used and how it could be improved for the future. Local people know their places best and their knowledge really helped to make sure the design responded to local needs and views.
